Benefits of membership
Union membership provides the opportunity to advocate for yourself and your clients by participating in contract negotiations that affect salary, benefits and working conditions.
With AFSCME Local 2620, members don't speak alone, but with the power of a unified voice and with the legal mandate of collective bargaining.
While all Unit 19 employees are covered by our contract and entitled to its protections, only members of Local 2620 determine what issues are brought to the bargaining table and only members can vote on ratification or rejection of a tentative agreement.
Along with these programs, members are entitled to a variety of free or discounted services and admissions to various amusements and recreational activities. Go to the Member Resources section and click on Member Benefits.
What does it cost?
Current dues are eight-tenths of one percent of each member's gross salary, plus periodic increases mandated by the International Union.
Non-members are required to pay a fair share fee not to exceed membership dues. To become a member, a Unit 19 employee must submit a signed membership application.
There is no initiation fee for a new member.
More than 75% of dues money is retained by the Local and its service council. Funds are used to conduct the day-to-day business of the Local, to represent Unit 19 employees in grievances and member appeals before the State Personnel Board, to cover expenses of Meet and Confer and Contract Negotiation sessions, and to obtain legal assistance when necessary.
Just under 20% of our dues money goes to AFSCME's International office. The International union provides professional expertise in contract negotiations, training and educational materials, research, lobbying and other legislative activities.
